Week 1 Resources

In this week's sermon, we dove into Jesus's Genealogy (found in Matthew 1:1-16) and learned how Jesus redeems messy, messy families.

We often find ourselves hoping the Christmas season will somehow make everything picture-perfect—but it never really does, does it? The good news is that Jesus offers a much deeper hope: that He can do good things in and through us, even in our mess.

What are you hoping Jesus will do in and through your family this season?

Take a look at the resources below to help you set aside some time this week to reflect on what you’ve been learning about Jesus’ love for family.

Luke 19:40 "He replied, 'If they kept quiet, the stones along the road would burst into cheers!'"

Ephesians 4:32 "And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ."

Colossians 3:21 "Fathers, do not exasperate your children, so that they won’t become discouraged."

Acts 16:34 "He brought them into his house, set a meal before them, and rejoiced because he had come to believe in God with his entire household."

Proverbs 1:8 "Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction, and don’t reject your mother’s teaching."

Exodus 20:12 "Honor your father and your mother so that you may have a long life in the land that the Lord your God is giving you."

James 1:19–20 "My dear brothers and sisters, understand this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger, for human anger does not accomplish God’s righteousness."

Romans 12:10 "Love one another deeply as brothers and sisters. Take the lead in honoring one another."

_______________

  • Describe your family in three words. In what ways, do those words reflect God's heart for your family? In what ways, do they not?

  • When was the last time you spoke encouraging words to each of your family members? Take time to write down and share some affirming words.

  • Write a short prayer that expresses your hopes for your family and share it with them.

  • The genealogy of Jesus demonstrates that all are welcome into His family. How can we make our home an environment where all family members feel welcomed, loved, and encouraged?

_______________

  • Lord, thank you for the gift of my family, both biological and spiritual. Please bless us with your love and help us grow closer.  Guide our words and actions and fill them with your love and grace.

  • Merciful Father, may my whole household place their faith in you and experience genuine salvation.  I pray this for all future generations.  May my family and lineage shine in this dark and broken world.

  • God of Mercy, I ask for your help in forgiving those who have hurt me within my family. Free me from bitterness and resentment. And, forgive me for any hurt I’ve caused others.

  • Father, help me to face the pain of past family experiences. Give me grace to process those experiences and to begin healing from them.
